How you’ll make an impact in this role
- Responsible for directing the strategy, implementation, and operations of Point of Care (POC) testing programs across all acute and ambulatory sites within the Ascension system.
- This individual serves as the system-level Subject Matter Expert (SME) to ensure high-quality, efficient, and compliant POC testing services throughout the organization.
- Strategic Leadership: Developing a national strategy for POC testing, including standard operating processes (SOPs), education plans, and policies.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations (CLIA, CAP, TJC) and designing resources to maintain inspection readiness across all markets.
- Quality Control: Establishing a robust quality management system, including proficiency testing, troubleshooting, and the development of enterprise-wide tools.
- Training and Competency: Implementing comprehensive training and assessment programs for all personnel performing POC testing.
- Collaboration: Working with Laboratory Services, Nursing, The Resource Group, and Ascension Technologies to optimize workflows and evaluate EMR integration.
- Resource Management: Partnering with stakeholders to make cost-effective recommendations for instrumentation, supplies, and inventory management.
- Technical Oversight: Providing expertise in selecting, validating, and maintaining POC instrumentation and methods.
- Data Management: Overseeing the collection and analysis of POC testing data to ensure accuracy and proper integration with EHR and LIS systems.
What minimum requirements you’ll need
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
Preferred Credential(s):
• Medical Technologist (ASCP) credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).
• Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).
• Medical Tech credentialed from the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
Education:
- High School diploma equivalency with 5 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required, with 2 of those years being in leadership/management OR Associate's degree/Bachelor's degree with 3 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required, with 2 of those years being in leadership/management.
What additional preferences we're seeking
Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific discipline (Master's degree preferred).
- Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP or equivalent.
Professional Experience
- 5+ years of experience in clinical laboratory settings, with a specific focus on POC testing and management.
- Extensive experience within large, multi-facility healthcare systems.
- Proven track record in the implementation and management of POC middleware systems.
- Demonstrated experience with process improvement methodologies, such as Lean and Six Sigma.
Knowledge & Skills
- Regulatory Compliance: Comprehensive understanding of CLIA, CAP, and TJC requirements.
- Quality Management: Expertise in quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing procedures for POC.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in laboratory information systems and data analysis.
- Core Competencies: Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities, combined with excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Adaptability: Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in fast-paced environments.
