Responsibilities
Position Summary:
As a member of the Central Ethics Unit at the System Office, the Director, Ethics Integration (Multiple Ministry Markets), supports the implementation of Proactive Ethics Integration across those Ministry Markets with less than $2B in annual NPSR. The Director of Ethics Integration promotes alignment with established practices and expectations across the assigned markets for the purpose of ensuring highly reliable ethics services that strengthen Ascension’s Catholic ministry identity. The Director has primary responsibility for assessing the quality of the Ethics programs and services across the in-scope Markets. In addition to supporting the clinical ethics operations in those Ministry Markets, the Director of Ethics Integration will serve as the first point of contact at the Central Ethics Unit for organizational ethics issues, as needed. The Director participates as a fully engaged member of both the Ethics Advisory Community and the Ethics Advisory Leadership Council to develop systematic approaches, processes, policies, resources, and content for ministry decision support, ethics education, consultation and integration into the organization’s clinical processes across Ascension.
This position requires travel to each Ministry Market served on an as-needed basis as determined by the Director in consultation with the Senior Director, Clinical Ethics Operations, and no less than a bi-annual visit to each Market.
Major Accountabilities:
A. Support the CMIO within their Ministry Markets, as needed and in collaboration with the CEU, to ensure highly reliable Catholic ministry identity and consistency with The Ethical and Religious
Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
B. Provide matrixed leadership supervision, subject matter expertise, mentoring and professional development opportunities for the Managers, Clinical Ethics, within their Ministry Markets.
C. Provide strategic and operational leadership for Clinical Ethics programming within their Ministry Markets by:
- Assessing and supporting operations of ethics committees, consultation services, education, and integration into organizational and clinical processes consistent with system-wide standards;
- Providing high level ministry market ethics expertise through collaboration with the Managers of Clinical Ethics to support especially complex patient care ethics consultations;
- Supporting the CMIOs and Ethics Managers on relevant initiatives, workstreams, and requests from clinical committees, workgroups and service lines; and,
- Providing subject matter expertise through collaboration with the Managers of Clinical Ethics within the Markets to support the development, revision and updates of applicable policies.
D. In Ministry Markets that do not have an embedded Manager, Clinical Ethics:
- Provide subject matter expertise in clinical ethics consultation, including but not limited to the interpretation and application of the ERDs, to support multidisciplinary care teams, patients, and families in addressing ethical dimensions of patient care, as appropriate to the clinical ethics consultation processes of the Market;
- Support the CMIO in leading the operations of the Ethics Integration Committees; and
- Support the CMIO in developing and arranging the provision of clinical ethics-related education for providers, staff, and associates to further equip them to navigate ethical decision-making and to reinforce an ethical culture of care, the ERDs and Ascension’s Catholic ministry identity.
E. Support, in collaboration with the other members of the CEU, values-compatible mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, affiliations, master service agreements and other transactions with other-than-Catholic providers, systems and organizations within their Ministry Market(s) to ensure consistency with our institutional commitments as a healing ministry of the Catholic Church, as appropriate.
F. Support clinical ethics-related education for Associates at all levels of the organization.
G. Oversee data collection process(es) and utilization to empirically assess high reliability, continuous quality improvement, and report on the impact of Ethics services, education and integration.
H. Continue the development of one’s own professional skills and competencies relative to the role of Director of Ethics Integration, as appropriate.
I. Other duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationships:
A. The Director of Ethics Integration has a solid line reporting relationship to the Senior Director, Clinical Ethics Operations.
B. The Director of Ethics Integration has a dotted line supervisory reporting relationship of the Managers of Clinical Ethics embedded in the Ministry Markets in which they serve (see III.b. above).
Requirements
Education:
- Master's in Healthcare Ethics, Bioethics or Theology required.
- PhD preferred.
Work Experience:
- 5 years of experience required.
- 10 years of experience preferred.
- 2 years of leadership or management experience required.
- 5 years of leadership or management experience preferred.
Additional Preferences
- PhD strongly preferred
- Experience in health care, preferably Catholic health care, in the administrative and clinical contexts, especially working with leadership teams, ethics committees and performing both clinical and organizational ethics consultations and ethics education.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated familiarity with: health care ethics, including clinical and organizational ethics, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, Catholic moral teaching and Catholic Social Thought, health care systems and institutions, health care law, health care administration, including financing and health policy, ethics committees and processes of clinical consultation.
- Demonstrated ability to: participate on senior leadership teams, demonstrate servant leadership, lead through influence and change management skills, mentor, teach, give presentations and write clearly and effectively; contribute to the discipline of health care ethics through research and publication and developing educational programs and resources to think critically, problem solve and facilitate discernment; facilitate meetings and groups with ease, including the use of mediation techniques, to build consensus.
