General Summary of Position
Unit Highlights
Come join the nursing team on MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Spine Surgery, Neuro Med & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (C5-3), where we pride ourselves on teamwork, fun, and professional development!
C5-3 is a recently renovated, all private room, 14-bed adult Neuro Medical and Spine Surgery Unit. C5-3 nurses work collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide high-quality, patient-centered, specialty care. Two of C5-3’s 14 beds are specialized Epilepsy Monitoring beds, featuring state-of-the-art Natus monitoring to care for patients with epilepsy or seizure-like activity. These patients are on 24hr video EEG monitoring and may be candidates for Ictal-SPECT scans to determine the area of the brain that is generating their seizures. The patient population for the remaining beds is a mix of postoperative adult neurosurgical patients with brain and spine disorders, general medicine patients, and neurological patients, including Multiple Sclerosis patients who may require intravenous immunoglobulin treatment.
MedStar Georgetown’s neuroscience specialty centers and programs include a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence for Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders for specialized evaluation and treatments, including deep brain stimulation; the Epilepsy Center, featuring an advanced monitoring unit for the accurate diagnosis of adults and children; the Multiple Sclerosis Center, the largest in the mid-Atlantic, with an international reputation as a referral center for special therapies; the Neuromuscular Diseases Clinic, offered in conjunction with the Muscular Dystrophy Association; and a multidisciplinary Spine Center, offering advanced treatment for spinal cord tumors, spine cancer, neck disorders and degenerative conditions, often through minimally invasive surgical techniques or CyberKnife®.
