This position oversees all aspects of patient care for Nursing and Patient Care Services at Essentia Health Duluth Hospital as well as nursing professional practice oversight and leaders within the facility and any affiliated clinical services wherein nurses work (including acute, ambulatory, and other locations as identified unique to the community facility). The Nursing Director works with East Market Chief Nursing Officer to guide nursing’s growth, clinical practice, staffing effectiveness, and patient satisfaction. Coordinates activities between defined areas and provides clinical and administrative leadership and expertise. Facilitates an atmosphere of interactive management and the development of collegial relationships among nursing personnel and others. Has major responsibility for the implementation of the vision, mission, plans, and standards of the organization and nursing services within defined areas of responsibility. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: •Directly manages the fiscal and clinical operations of Essentia Health Duluth Hospital. •Develops budgets in collaboration with East Market CNO.•Supports nursing professional practice and operations in all nursing care locations within the [defined areas of responsibility]. •Integrates services with the hospital’s primary functions maintaining communication with medical and nursing staff, Administration, patients and their families/significant others.•Implements and evaluates policies and procedures that guide and support provision of care. •Supervises, and/or partners with nursing leaders at local facilities, nursing and support staff and assures staff competency.•Participates in Magnet Nursing Journey, Pathway to Excellence, CMS 5 Star journey and related initiatives.•Conducts ongoing assessment and improvement of the operational and nursing performance.•Promotes the Quality and Safety program within region, in partnership with system quality resources, maintaining appropriate quality control programs (where applicable).•Oversees and drives performance in quality metrics, patient safety and clinical excellence initiatives using the Magnet Nursing Scorecard along with other operational data and information.•Participates in strategic planning: Develops, markets, implements, and evaluates new services and programs recommending space and resources needed.•Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies.•Establishes and promotes collaborative relationships with physicians and other health providers and participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs of patient care. •Establishes and promotes collaborative relationships with regional nursing and clinical education programs to promote the healthcare profession and promote regional job opportunities.•Promotes and facilitates intradepartmental, interdepartmental and regional communications and relationships among clinicians and staff.•Develops goals and objectives for nursing in partnership with the region’s and market’s nursing leaders, and participates in development of goals and objectives for Nursing Services.•Supports and enables orientation, in-service training, professional development and continuing education for all staff within the department.•Engages staff in active participation in professional governance for nursing, unit, hospital, clinic, EMG and regional committees, and unit, facility and system professional governance initiatives, etc.•Assesses and evaluates staff, creates coaching and development plans to achieve and sustain high performers.•Collaborates with CNO/HR re workforce planning and hiring needs, retention initiatives, employee relations and disciplinary action (when and if needed).•Develops and sustains strategies to ensure patient and family satisfaction and engagement.•Develops and sustains strategies to ensure employee engagement and satisfaction and creation, implementation and sustaining of healthy work environments. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS Years of experience required: Five or more years of demonstrated clinical nursing leadership and management experience required. Specific types of experience and skills required:• Results oriented and engaged in collaborative goal setting.• Displays sound judgment and critical thinking.• Demonstrates time management skills, including prioritization, timely follow up and deadlines.• Quality performance monitoring, labor management, scheduling, clinical / contract and new hire processes.• Evidence of preparing and monitoring annual Nursing unit budgets.• Sound Fiscal Management skills.• Excellent inter-personal and inter-professional communications skills; in writing and verbally.• Previous experience with Magnet Nursing program is a plus.• Active and unencumbered RN license in MN required. • Previous experience with labor relations and bargaining union negotiations a plus.
Education Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) and relevant masters or advanced degree are required.
Licensure/Certification Qualifications:
Current nursing licensure in state(s) of employment
