What you will be doing
As part of our driving team, drivers must have a valid Class A CDL. Our drivers are responsible for inspecting, fueling and driving our tractor trailers on the delivery routes. Our drivers must have a strong commitment to DOT compliance, safety and accident-free miles while providing top notch service to our stores.
Our delivery routes consist of local and regional routes, where our drivers are mostly home daily. We do have some overnight routes in selective parts of the country. We provide our drivers with state of the art equipment with an average of around 3 years old for our tractors. We have a strong preventative maintenance program that helps reduce breakdowns and unwanted downtime on the road. Delivering to our stores our drivers are limited to mainly unloading pallets with electric pallet jacks, with some exceptions. Our drivers are paid weekly, have excellent benefits along with great recognition program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Report to work at scheduled start time.
• Receive route paperwork, truck and trailer assignment and instructions for route.
• Review Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) and acknowledge prior report for each piece of equipment. Provide written report for post trip inspection for all units. Document and report any defects or concerns with tractor and/or trailer within the (DVIR).
• Conduct pre-trip, inter trip, and post trip inspection for all units operated in accordance with FMCSA regulation 49 C.F.R. § 396.11.
• Verify load and load destination and proper load securement.
• Couple the tractor and trailer, inspect the fifth wheel plate, release handle and locking jaws.
• Scale load by gross weight and/or axles/tandems according to trailer type and state regulations. If needed, adjust the load to redistribute weight.
• Follow route plan and meet all delivery / pick up requirements for each store.
• Complete store clean outs as contracted. Receive and load items (e.g., salvage, assets, returns, composts, bails, egg trays) for return to distribution center as needed.
• Communicate any issue that will affect the route plan.
• Ensure all cargo is secured throughout the delivery route.
• Complete and verify all required paperwork and temperature requirements.
• Accurately report hours of service in accordance with DOT and FMCSA regulations 49 C.F.R. § 395.8 and 49 C.F.R. § 395.11 using an electronic logging device (ELD). Review log and then certify log at the end of each day.
• Perform and document post-trip inspection on truck/tractor at the end of the shift in accordance with DOT and FMCSA regulation 49 C.F.R. § 396.11 and state-specific guidance.
• Document and report any defects or concerns with truck/tractor and/or trailer within the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
The hourly rate for this role is $31.53 per hour, but no less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates will vary based on things like location, experience, qualifications, and the terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement.
What we are searching for
Qualifications: The following are preferred or desired unless specifically stated:
• Able to operate an 18-wheel tractor / trailer to deliver and pick up products from the stores.
• Must have a safe driving record / clear MVR.
• Must have minimum 2 years of experience driving a 53ft. tractor / trailer.
• Must be willing to work weekends, nights and holidays.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Customer Service: Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Winter Driving: Ability to put on snow chains and drive in snowy or slippery conditions as needed.
• Fuild levels and Fueling: Must have general knowledge of proper procedures of checking fluids / fuel and replenishment process.
• FMCSA Regulations: Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements and regulations, including hours of service.
• Safe Operation of Commercial Vehicle: To always operate the vehicle safely in a professional manner. Following all traffic laws and always representing the company in a positive manner.
• Defensive Driving: Attending all required safety training and have knowledge of defensive driving techniques that anticipate dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others when operating a motor vehicle. This includes managing space around vehicles, managing speed of travel, maintaining awareness of other drivers, checking, and using mirrors, and using indicators such as signaling.
• Problem Solving: Ability to define a problem; determine the cause of the problem; identify, prioritize, and select alternatives for a solution; and implement a solution.
• Pallet Jacks: Knowledge of and ability to maneuver pallet jacks in a safe manner to not put self or others in a hazardous/dangerous situation.
• Load Securing: Knowledge of load-securing methods.
• Route planning: Making yourself familiar with each location and areas in which stores are located, including being aware of surroundings on the way to and while at stores. * Not required at time of hire
PHYSICAL ENVIRNOMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands
• Remain in a seated position for prolonged periods of time.
• Operate motorized vehicles such as tractor trailers.
• Climb ramps and/or stairs to enter/exit tractor and/or trailer.
• Ability to lift between 1-50 pounds.
• Ability to push/pull 100 pounds.
• Ability to lift up to 100 pounds on occasion.
• Ability to engage in crawling, crouching, kneeling, or stooping as required.
• Reach overhead and unstack pallets up to 6 feet high.
Working Conditions
• Work varying hours of the day as required.
• Work overnight as required.
• Work in environments requiring personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to steel toe boots close-toed slip resistant shoes.
• Work in areas with potential exposure to contaminants or hazardous chemicals (such as pollutants, gases, dust, or odors).
• Work in areas requiring exposure to varying temperatures, extreme heat or cold, and/or wet, damp, or drafty conditions.
• Work in areas that are in close proximity to moving materials, mechanical parts, settings, or any moving objects (most commonly moving machinery or equipment) that could cause bodily harm.
• Work in areas with exposure to a shaking object or surface that causes a strain on the body or extremities.
