Staff Software Engineer (Backend)
Location: San Francisco, New York, or Remote (US)
On-site/Remote| Full-time
Compensation: $225K – $300K
We aren't building another chatbot or a "copilot" to sit on a sidebar. We are building the next generation of the workforce: Autonomous AI Employees.
Our flagship product is an AI Business Development Representative (BDR) that doesn't just assist a sales team—it joins it. She researches leads, manages her own deliverability infrastructure, handles objections, and books meetings autonomously. With over $8M ARR, $35M+ in funding (including Y Combinator), and a rapidly growing customer base, we are now tackling the engineering mountain of "Ava 2.0." We are looking for foundational engineers to build the backend orchestration that makes autonomous digital workers a reality.
The Role
As a Staff Software Backend Engineer, you will build the engine that allows AI employees to think, act, and evolve. This is a high-leverage role where you will own major portions of a platform that replaces an entire enterprise sales stack—including CRM, lead databases, and campaign engines—within a single product.
Key Responsibilities
- AI Orchestration: Design and build the high-throughput pipelines that allow our AI to process millions of signals (lead data, engagement metrics, behavioral patterns) and make real-time decisions.
- Platform Ownership: Build and scale the infrastructure for email deliverability, inbox management, and complex AI coordination.
- End-to-End Execution: We don’t separate architecture from implementation. You will design, build, deploy, and monitor your own systems.
- Rapid Iteration: Work in a flat engineering org with zero red tape. We ship constantly and move at the speed of a high-growth startup.
Our Tech Stack:
- TypeScript / Node.js
- PostgreSQL, Redis
- Kubernetes, AWS (ECS, EC2)
- Mastra, Temporal, Langfuse
- Experience: 6+ years of backend experience, ideally in a high-growth startup environment where you owned systems from ideation to production.
- Technical Depth: Deep understanding of distributed systems, database performance, and API design. You should be comfortable building data-intensive services at scale.
- AI-Native Workflow: You are a "5x engineer" who knows how to leverage modern tools (like Claude Code) to accelerate your output.
- Infrastructure Savvy: Experience with cloud-native infrastructure, including containers, orchestration, CI/CD, and observability.
- Ownership Mindset: You have strong opinions on reliability and testing but possess the judgment to know when to move fast to hit market windows.
- Language Proficiency: TypeScript/Node is preferred, but we value strong fundamentals in Python, Go, or similar languages.
- Meaningful Impact: You’ll be working on non-trivial backend complexity involving autonomous agents making real-world decisions.
- High Ownership: Small team, massive scope. There are no layers between your code and the customer.
- Competitive Compensation: A strong base salary and significant equity in a company with proven revenue and traction.
- Culture of Excellence: Join a "winning team" environment—low ego, high standards, and direct communication.
- Flexibility: Positions available in San Francisco, New York City, or Remote (US).
