Our Mission:
ButterflyMX is on a mission to empower people to open and manage doors & gates from a smartphone. Our products are installed in more than 15,000+ multifamily, commercial, gated communities, and student-housing properties worldwide, including properties developed, owned, and managed by the most trusted names in real estate. Our features are designed for developers, owners, property managers, and tenants and our products lower operating costs and improve tenant satisfaction.
Our Solution:
Developers and owners no longer need to run building wiring or install in-unit hardware. Property managers can grant building access, revoke permissions, and review entry logs from an online dashboard. Residents can open doors from their smartphones, issue visitor access, and see who is trying to enter the building.
Our Culture & Values:
Fantastic people are the key to our success. As a distributed, primarily remote workforce, we’re looking for more intelligent, passionate, collaborative, and down-to-earth individuals to join our growing team We’re driven by a shared commitment to excellence and innovation, grounded in our core values: We delight our customers, We take ownership, We are a community of collaborators, We speak up, We think big and do small, and We are tenacious.
We are looking for a stellar Mechanical Engineer to design, develop and support the physical and mechanical aspects of our current and future hardware products. You will be working collaboratively as part of a high-performance hardware development team on-site at our Hardware Engineering lab in Southern California, providing knowledge, expertise and design engineering of mechanical, physical, and thermal solutions. This role will report to the SVP Hardware and be responsible for all mechanical, physical, and thermal aspects of our products.
Responsibilities
- Own the mechanical design for all products, including sheet metal enclosures, molded plastic/metal components, and all supporting mechanical structures.
- Drive innovation by experimenting with novel materials, manufacturing techniques, and design approaches to push the boundaries of product performance and aesthetics.
- Rapidly prototype and iterate using advanced fabrication methods (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining, and soft-tool molding) to accelerate the design process.
- Balance creativity with engineering rigor, ensuring that designs meet strict reliability, durability, and cost-efficiency standards.
- Design for extreme conditions, ensuring products withstand temperature extremes, impact, vibration, moisture, and other real-world challenges.
- Optimize mechanical structures using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Structural Stress Analysis (SSA) to enhance product longevity and performance.
- Solve complex mechanical challenges through hands-on experimentation, testing, and iterative refinement.
- Explore new ways to reduce mechanical complexity and cost without compromising product robustness or quality.
- Rethink conventional approaches to enclosure and mounting design, making installations easier and more elegant.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (industrial design, electrical, firmware, quality, and manufacturing) to create holistic, high-performance product solutions.
- Identify, qualify, and support manufacturers while driving excellence in design for manufacturability (DFM), assembly (DFA), and serviceability (DFS).
- Ensure all mechanical designs are documented and accessible, including:
- 3D models and 2D engineering drawings
- Photorealistic renderings and technical illustrations
- Installation, user, and maintenance guides
- Stay at the forefront of mechanical design and fabrication by researching cutting-edge materials, coatings, and lightweighting strategies.
- Challenge assumptions and test the limits of what’s possible in mechanical design, always searching for a better, smarter, and more elegant solution.
- Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience
- Fluent in SolidWorks 3D modeling software including FEA (Finite Element Analysis)
- Significant practical experience with sheet metal and plastics manufacturing processes
- Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, including forces and torques, mass and basic thermodynamics
- Insatiably curious
- Fanatical about product design and all aspects of the creation of physical products
- Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative product development environment with strong accountability and ownership
- Comprehensive Medical (ButterflyMX covers 90% of the cost), Dental, and Vision plans (ButterflyMX covers 100% of the cost) starting day 1
- 401(k) plan with a match
- 13 paid holidays, 25 PTO days
- Paid Family Leave
- Employee Assistance Program
- Quarterly self-care stipends
- Access to optional benefits including pre-tax flexible healthcare spending accounts (FSA and HSA), Dependent Care FSA, and Commuter Benefits, as well as optional Supplemental Life, AD&D, Hospital Indemnity, Disability, Legal, Accident, Critical Illness, Pet, and Personal Liability Insurance
- And more!
