Job Summary
The Class A Driver is responsible for transporting hazardous waste from generator sites or facilities to company locations or external disposal facilities. This position ensures strict adherence to Department of Transportation (DOT), hazardous materials (HAZMAT), and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations.
Essential Functions
- Transport Hazardous Waste (60%)
Safely transport hazardous waste using tankers, vans, or roll-off dump trailers. Maintain compliance with DOT and HAZMAT regulations and coordinate daily schedules with dispatchers to minimize delays.
- Load and Unload Materials (10%)
Properly load and unload hazardous and non-hazardous materials, ensuring correct segregation, weight limits, and equipment usage.
- Vehicle Placarding (10%)
Ensure proper placarding of vehicles in compliance with DOT and company requirements.
- Maintain Documentation (10%)
Accurately complete daily logs, trip reports, vehicle inspection reports, timecards, expense reports, and other required documentation.
- Equipment Maintenance (10%)
Maintain, clean, and inspect assigned equipment to ensure it remains in excellent working condition.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
Education
- Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Additional certifications related to transportation or hazardous materials.
Experience
- Required: 0–3 years of driving experience.
- Preferred: Experience in hazardous material transport.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- HAZMAT certification (preferred).
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to use mobile computing devices.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot minor equipment issues.
- Capable of working independently and making real-time decisions in the field.
Physical Requirements
- Work Hours: Typical shift involves sitting for 6 hours and walking or standing for 2 hours.
- Physical Tasks:
- Frequent bending, climbing, and lifting (up to 50 lbs).
- Rarely lifting over 50 lbs with assistive equipment (e.g., drum dolly).
- Climbing ladders, inspecting vehicles, and handling overhead tasks (e.g., closing doors, changing placards).
- Equipment Use: Operates cars, trucks, and specialized machinery (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks).
Additional Requirements
- Vision: Ability to perform tasks requiring near and far visual acuity, peripheral vision, and color differentiation.
- Hearing: Ability to hear and respond to environmental sounds, alarms, and communication.
- Other Physical Demands:
- Move drums (up to 800 lbs) with a drum dolly.
