Roles and Responsibilities:
- Manages assigned staff in the safe makeup of passenger trains utilizing the more then 1200 rail cars and engines. And assures adherence to established schedules and daily rail consist of equipment programs.
- Coordinates with Mechanical Department regarding the maintenance, repair, inspection and cleaning of rail rolling stock at system-wide locations.
- Coordinates staff work assignments. Delegates work to assigned employees, assures appropriate training in work procedures and reviews completed work for conformance to established standards. Handle mid-year and annual performance reviews and document same.
- Administers policy and procedures that affect the movement of trains, employees and passengers within assigned locations via Division Notices, Special Train movements and control of employee files.
- Coordinates the handling of labor grievances. Consults with Labor Relations and Union Representatives for the resolution of penalty time claims and disputes. Reviews results of labor investigations and carries out discipline as required. This would include the Yardmaster craft.
- Manages the activities of assigned employees during service disruptions, including derailments, equipment failures, power outages, weather emergencies, etc to ensure the best service is being provided to our passengers.
- Ensure the needs of vendors as it pertains to equipment and the Office of Consist Management are met without compromising our passenger service.
- Work with other railroads as necessary to allow movement of our railroad equipment over their territory and the movement of their equipment over ours. As well as special train movements that may be required.
- Handle the supervision and assignments of ALL the Yardmasters at NJT. Ensuring adequate coverage is established where needed and as necessary for the safe operation and daily performance in ensuring all trains are made up and ready to be dispatched at the prescribed time for or passengers.
- Coordinate with Mechanical Sr. Management to ensure all equipment wants, needs and goals are handled fluently and fully.
- Lead all other duties as directed by the DGM Transportation of Rail Operations and Superintendent of Equipment Management
Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate degree in Transportation, Business Administration or related area, or equivalent, and eight (8) years of progressive experience in railroad operations, to include supervisory experience.
- Must have knowledge of all facets of the transportation industry, including mechanical functions, general management skills and familiarity with budget and financial processes. Most possess excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
- One (1) year of closely related experience may be substituted for each year of Education required.
