DescriptionAre you an experienced researcher using artificial intelligence (AI) to contribute to critical challenges across complex systems domains?
Do you enjoy leading and working with cross-disciplinary teams?
If so, we’re looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!
We are looking for an AI Researcher to bring their creative problem solving talents to our teams, to lead and contribute to the research and development of innovative algorithms and prototypes for scientific discovery.
Our Complex Systems Group, within the Intelligent Systems Center (www.jhuapl.edu/isc), develops novel AI methods to accelerate discovery and design for materials science, protein engineering, climate intelligence and earth systems, as well as other physical and biological systems.
As a researcher in our group, your primary responsibility will be contributing to and leading projects in AI for scientific discovery across complex systems. As a member of our research team, you will contribute to projects in a variety of ways, such as designing, training, and developing machine learning (ML) algorithms, collecting and preparing data, evaluating models, and programming. You will establish collaborations with complex system domain experts and seek opportunities to propose your ideas for internal or external funding. You will also establish working relationships with our Program Managers to identify opportunities to grow our work in key areas. You will publish your research in impactful venues and engage with the external research community, external collaborators, and sponsors.
We are committed to developing exceptional talent and fostering a culture of innovation, and strive to foster an environment that welcomes a diversity of backgrounds and professional experience as we make advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
QualificationsYou meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have:
- A PhD in a relevant field such as AI, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Engineering.
- Have 5+ years of research experience.
- A track record of publishing in scholarly journals or conferences.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct machine learning research studies.
- Experience in one or more of our core complex systems skills: AI/ML algorithms, data science, deep learning, graph theory, or statistical analysis.
- Strong programming skills and proficiency in commonly-used ML languages such as Python, and ML and data science libraries, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenCV.
- Familiarity with advanced AI methods such as generative adversarial networks, physics-informed neural networks, neural operators, surrogate models, graph neural networks, and foundation models.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to articulate complex technical issues for a wide range of audiences.
- The ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:
- Have been a project manager or led small teams.
- Have experience in writing technical proposals or other forms of business development.
