THE ROLE
The Director of Nursing coordinates the functions of the nursing department within the nursing center, including, but not limited to planning, staffing, evaluating, and budgeting for the nursing department. Promotes a team approach and an environment of learning and professional growth within the nursing department. Cultivates innovation and supports person-centered approaches to providing services. Is responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality care in a manner which supports the team concept, caring and respect reflecting the mission and philosophy of PBNC and the Providence Health and Services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversees the quality of nursing care. Plans and organizes systems of care. Evaluates policies, procedures, staffing patterns and staff development, monitors quality through ongoing quality assurances program.
- Manages RN/LPN and RCMS staff which includes hiring, coaching, training, evaluating, disciplinary action and discharge as necessary.
- Keeps current of resident condition, including significant changes which could warrant nursing or medical intervention.
- Ensures licensed nursing staff have valid, current licenses in Oregon, and practice within the limits of nursing practice rules.
- Along with ADNS, works collaboratively with the RCMs, RNs and the interdisciplinary staff to ensure quality care.
- Interprets and maintains standards of nursing care, both statutory and current professional practice.
- Prepares and monitors nursing department budget.
- Coaches staff to develop knowledge of professional accountability, authority and responsibility. Acts as preceptor for new RCMs and Nursing Supervisors.
- Maintains current knowledge of regulatory requirements. Manages the maintenance of the regulatory required documentation.
- Actively participate in interdisciplinary and leadership team meetings.
- Reviews unusual occurrence reports and nursing department employee incidents and ensures appropriate investigation and follow up.
- Provides oversight for employee health issues such as vaccinations and TB skin testing.
- Assists with the admission process in determining appropriate patient/resident placement when appropriate.
- Acts as a resource for family members, clarifying and interpreting center policies and sharing information pertinent to the treatment of their family member in a supportive professional manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, within 8 months of hire
- Master's Degree in related field (preferred)
- Upon hire: Oregon Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)
- 1 year of management responsibility
- Experience in long term care
- Ability to provide leadership and guidance in promoting the highest level of quality of gerontological nursing through evidence based practice
- Knowledge of and ability to apply pertinent regulations, health care trends, and administrative policies and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to effectively mentoring, train and develop staff members for new clinical and leadership responsibilities
- Ability to recognize urgent situations and respond appropriately
- Ability to provide a variety of complex services using good organizing, prioritizing, and time management techniques
- Basic knowledge of Human Resources practices and processes needed to manage staff
- Demonstrated ability to think independently, exercise sound judgment, and make appropriate decisions
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and the public
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with management, staff, and the public including formal presentations
- Proficient using computer with Microsoft applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic health records.
