Summary:
Required Work Experience: Must be currently enrolled in an accredited surgical technologist program subject to adequate document submission and verification.
Staff Relief -The Surgical Technologist Extern, under supervision of a Certified Surgical Technologist, performs basic patient care procedures to support the unit and clinic health care team.
Responsibilities:
Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and microbiology.
Handles turnover of operating room in a timely manner to include tearing down case, and disposing of sharp and contaminated items in accordance with policy.
Applies basic knowledge in surgical procedures.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned which may include, but not limited to, patient transportation and assisting in the Sterile Processing Department.
Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis (under the supervision of RN) and helps apply dressings.
Assists with gowning, gloving and draping. Passes instruments, and performs counts according to hospital policy.
Assists in pre-operative procedures such as assembly, selection of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment and preparing for next cases. Applies basic knowledge to reading preference cards to assist with surgical case preparation.
Establishes and maintains a sterile field for use during a surgical procedure.
