PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To promote patient, physician, and staff satisfaction through proactive, supportive administrative services. Performing functions of receptionist, registrar, data entry clerk, order entry clerk and liaison to ancillary departments and other agencies. Performs clerical, registration, and related duties as required to facilitate effective patient care.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Handles communication in the various areas of the Emergency Department using ChristianaCare telephone etiquette policy.
- Greets all customers, including patients, family members and visitors in a caring and professional manner.
- Receives, records, and relays all messages promptly and courteously.
- Receives inter- and intra-departmental communications and address appropriately.
- Places calls to physicians and other agencies for patient disposition as requested.
- Functions as receptionist and directs patients and visitors, provides visitor passes.
- Demonstrates knowledge of facility regulations regarding visitors.
- Follows procedures to initiate, notify, and document notification of organizational emergency codes, alerts, other established emergent protocols.
- Assists with records and reports, preparation and assembling of charts and forms.
- Directs physicians to appropriate nursing personnel for physician orders.
- Uses an ED tracking system functionality appropriately.
- Completes accurate demographic and insurance information, including verification of certain insurance types.
- Performs registration of patients using wireless laptop computers utilizing a workstation on wheels
- Maintains a solid working knowledge of third-party payor specifics relative to the Emergency Department, reducing financial risk for all parties; maximize delivery of patient care.
- Collects payments according to insurance and organizational requirements.
- Performs clerical duties related to admission/discharge/transfer using the departmental established financial computer system.
- Orders patient order sets and enters and sends lab specimens using the electronic record system while using a second check system.
- Prints records as requested by physician from the electronic record system.
- Makes entries into reporting system to comply with HIPPA regulations, for all information released to reporting agencies.
- Assists in development and implementation of customized new employee orientations.
- Assists administrative residents with follow-up including sending letters and faxes to physicians and outside agencies and other health care facilities.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental and safety rules and practices.
- Reports to supervisor any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations. Precepting of new Emergency Department employees.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of position.
SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
Contact with staff, patients, families, physicians, physician assistants, volunteers, ancillary departments, and outside agencies. Also, frequent contact with Information Services, HIMS and Patient Accounting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Two years’ experience in a medical, financial or marketing institution preferred.
- Experience in a patient care environment preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
