Pediatric Surgery Operating Room (OR) Unit Description
The Pediatric Surgery Operating Room at Duke University Hospital is a dedicated surgical unit specializing in caring for infants, children, and adolescents across multiple surgical specialties. Our pediatric surgical team is highly trained in addressing the unique medical needs of young patients, ensuring compassionate, family-centered care. The unit is equipped with the latest technology and child-friendly environments to reduce anxiety and provide the highest level of safety and comfort during procedures.
The Pediatric Surgery team at Duke University Hospital is highly skilled in the following specialties:
• Orthopedics (including fracture repair, limb deformity correction, and spinal Surgery)
• Neurosurgery (including craniotomies, spinal fusions, and hydrocephalus shunt placements)
• General Surgery (such as appendectomy, hernia repair, and neonatal Surgery)
• Urology (including hypospadias repair, vesicoureteral reflux surgery, and nephrectomy)
• Dental Surgery (such as dental extractions and treatment for dental trauma)
• Plastic Surgery (for cleft lip and palate repair, craniofacial reconstruction, and burn treatment)
• ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) (including tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and ear tube placement)

Staffed by pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, urologists, plastic surgeons, dental surgeons, ENT specialists, anesthesiologists, perioperative nurses, child life specialists, and surgical technologists, the Pediatric Surgery OR operates with a deep understanding of the physiological and emotional needs of children. The unit employs advanced techniques such as minimally invasive Surgery and robotic-assisted procedures, reducing recovery times and improving outcomes for young patients.
Our perioperative nurses are specially trained in pediatric care, ensuring that each child receives personalized, developmentally appropriate care throughout their surgical experience. Preoperative preparation includes child-friendly educational activities and techniques to ease anxiety, while post-operative care focuses on pain management, comfort, and family involvement.
The Pediatric Surgery OR at Duke University Hospital emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with departments such as pediatric oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, neurology, urology, plastic Surgery, and intensive care to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care. Our team is committed to excellence in pediatric surgical outcomes, offering innovative treatments and leading research to advance the field of pediatric Surgery.
Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:
• Previous work experience (1+ years) as a clinical nurse is preferred; at least one year of prior work experience as a registered nurse is required for a CN2 role.
• Graduation from an accredited Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program is required.
o RNs without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:
• Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina is required.
• BLS (or higher) certification required.
• Professional specialty certification (preferred).
