What this job involves: As a Senior Utilities Mechanic at Catalent, located in Bloomington, IN, you will play a vital role in the maintenance and repair of our HVAC, utilities, plumbing/piping, and site mechanical and fire/life safety systems. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of these systems, including water and steam processes, fire extinguishers, eye washes/showers, sprinkler risers, sprinkler and fire systems, pre-action fire systems, and hydrants. This position requires a high level of technical proficiency in a variety of building infrastructure areas. You will be responsible for both preventative and corrective maintenance, as well as the repair, restoration, and replacement of various components of building structures. Additionally, the role involves multi-skilled work, including pipe fitting, plumbing, and electrical tasks, to successfully complete daily and weekly assignments.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- In-depth understanding of engineering designs and operations of critical building systems and components. Ability to promptly recognize system shortcomings, troubleshoot, and respond to operational and emergency situations.
- Coordination of sprinkler inspections, sprinkler riser testing, and water flow testing (NFPA).
- Conducting facility inspections, assessing as-found conditions, and reporting on any issues impacting client occupancy, operations, and safety.
- Oversight of operations, repair, preventative maintenance, and installation of new piping, valves, and plumbing systems, including steam and water piping, and fire/life safety systems.
- Troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment and determining the necessary corrective actions to restore satisfactory operating conditions.
- Installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of machinery and mechanical equipment such as pumps, fans, and rotating equipment.
- Conducting minimal fabrications using lathe, milling machine, drill press, and other machine shop equipment.
- Rigging and moving of equipment as required.
- Maintenance and repair of locks, doors, controllers, and locking mechanisms.
- Repair and maintenance of plumbing components, including toilets, urinals, lavatories, flush valves, water fountains, sinks, drains, water heaters, piping, and sump pumps.
- Performing general building maintenance, repair, and restorative procedures as assigned.
- Conducting general technician tasks to maintain buildings and ensure their proper functioning.
- Maintenance and repair of single-phase electrical breakers, switches, receptacles, junction boxes, conduit, lights, and ballasts.
- Conducting temporary emergency general roofing repairs when necessary.
- Priming and painting building interior and exterior surfaces, including office spaces, outside areas, and controlled work environments.
- Possessing experience working in controlled environments is a plus.
- Performing general office maintenance tasks such as hanging pictures, installing keyboard trays, and repairing office furniture systems.
- Conducting vehicle safety inspections.
- Identifying, utilizing, and operating tools and equipment associated with the craft discipline.
- Comprehending and recognizing job-related work permits and completing Job Hazard Analysis.
- Working while wearing personal protective equipment, including rain gear, chemical protective clothing, respirators, safety harnesses, hard hats, earplugs, safety glasses, and other required gear.
- Estimating costs accurately and ordering necessary materials as required.
- Operating man lift, scissor lift, forklift, and respirator-fitted equipment as needed.
- Comfortably working at heights, in confined spaces, and off lifts and scaffolds, while adhering to elevated work standards.
- Complying with policies and procedures for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Ensuring compliance with state, county, or city ordinances, codes, or laws.
- Documenting work performance, materials procurement, and related information as directed.
- Performing any additional duties as assigned.

- Weekday AM Shift 4/3
- Weekday PM Shift 4/3
- Weekend AM Shift 4/3
- Weekend PM Shift 4/3
- Alternating Shift: Monday - Thursday for one week, and then Monday through Wednesday the following week
- Rotating Shift: 36 hours per week for one week, including 6 hours of built-in overtime, and 48 hours per week for the next week.
Physical Requirements:
- Adequate ability to perform required job functions, including lifting, bending, and moving in a safe and approved manner. Must be capable of lifting weights up to 50lbs.
- Comfortable working overhead and at heights.
- Skilled and physically capable of operating electric hand tools, working on ladders, carrying tools, lifting heavy loads, operating required equipment, and driving vehicles.
- Able to work in confined spaces such as closets, crawl spaces, attics, vaults, etc.
- Availability for on-call work, evening, night, and weekend assignments.
- Subject to 24-hour availability and ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Environmental conditions may vary, with work taking place either in the maintenance shop or the plant based on job requirements. Outdoor work in all weather conditions may be required.
Desired or preferred experience and technical skills:
- Valid trade license, completion of an apprenticeship, or equivalent vocational certification.
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience or equivalent education.
- 5+ years of experience working with piping/plumbing systems, mechanical systems, and boiler controls/operation.
- Strong skills to perform required job functions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in a customer service environment and effectively interact with clients.
- Team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with computer-based systems and programs, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
- Conflict resolution skills and excellent oral and written communication abilities.
