General Summary of Position
The incumbent in this position performs a variety of functions associated with the collection, transportation and processing of laboratory specimens from outpatients. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards. Working hours for this role Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares equipment, verifies patient identification, performs venipuncture and capillary puncture and collects other types of specimens according to hospital and laboratory procedure.Transports blood and blood products and other laboratory specimens to other hospital units/departments.Registers patients and enters physician's orders into the hospital computer, as required.Provides containers and instructions to outpatients, answers inquiries and takes outpatient orders.Maintains a safe and orderly work environment and follows all safety and regulatory procedures for the assigned specimen collection area.Keeps accurate records of outpatient blood drawing and specimen processing.Maintains supplies and equipment for the area.Works with supervisor(s) to identify, resolve and improve workflow, LIS or testing problems and issues.Participates in orientation and training or other opportunities for learning for the department, medical staff and other Hospital staff as delegated in relation to phlebotomy.Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required or
- the equivalent (GED). required
Experience
- Less than 1 year Related experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Phleb Tech - NPA - CPT NPA preferred or
- ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist preferred or
- ASCP - Medical Technologist
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of principles, methods and techniques of phlebotomy and laboratory specimen requirements.
- Ability to learn and utilize hospital computer systems.
- Able to remain calm and function in stressful situations.
- Must have effective interpersonal skills and bedside manner since working with individuals who are ill and facing venipuncture procedures.
This position has a hiring range of $23.52 - $23.54
