KickUp is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join a team that is reimagining how school districts grow their most valuable asset: their people.
KickUp is on a mission to help every educator thrive throughout their career. Our platform helps educational leaders capture data about teacher growth and use it to drive better outcomes for students. We’re a growing team building a product used by tens of thousands of educators.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be the technical leader on a team of engineers working to further develop one of our most popular products. You’ll collaborate closely with counterparts on Product and Design to dream up and implement new features that make KickUp more valuable to our customers and deepen our impact on improving the educator experience.
Why you should join KickUp
- Our product is a robust, data-rich professional growth platform. We’re proud to maintain an exceptional customer NPS above 80 and establish ourselves as an emerging leader in the K12 professional growth software market.
- We are a remote-first organization with high flexibility. We offer an extended holiday break, summer Fridays, and “Focus Fridays” – a day with limited Slack and meetings throughout the year. On a semi-annual basis, we gather for team on-sites.
- We offer robust benefits, including 401(k) matching, stock options, a variety of health insurance options, universal parental leave, and professional learning stipends.
- Our team is humble, sharp, and user-focused with a unique blend of both mission driven and business smart qualities. We care about the work and are committed to each others’ success.
- We’ve proven product-market fit, and still have a lot of growth ahead. Joining at this stage affords significant opportunities for professional growth and to have a meaningful impact.
About the role
In this role, you will:
- Build a modern platform that empowers educator growth. You’ll lead development on features that help school leaders better support their teachers and improve the performance and reliability of our product as our user base rapidly scales.
- Collaborate closely with product managers and designers. You’ll represent the engineering perspective on a cross-functional team to discover opportunities and define initiatives from their earliest stages.
- Serve in a role of technical leadership. You'll play quarterback on a team of several engineers of varying levels of experience and take lead in executing on the product roadmap. While this role doesn't have people management responsibilities, you'll work closely with engineering management to ensure the team is running successfully.
- Work across the entire stack. This is a full-stack position and you’ll have the chance to learn and contribute to our React frontend, our Django backend, and our Terraform-managed AWS infrastructure.
- Help shape our engineering culture. We’re a small but growing company, and — as a senior contributor — you’ll heavily influence our best practices, norms and processes as we scale the team.
- Be a mentor to your peers. You’ll provide thoughtful feedback and guidance to help grow other developers and build capacity on the team.
Some projects you could work on include:
- Adding new data visualization capabilities to our analytics platform to make it easy for end users to synthesize meaning from tens of thousands of data points.
- Building new features with best-in-class UX to streamline the workflows of teachers and the staff and administrators who support them.
- Optimizing API endpoints and database queries to handle ever increasing scales of data and usage.
About you
We believe diversity breeds innovation. We are actively looking to add members to our team who will bring diverse backgrounds, new perspectives, and a willingness to challenge us to improve the work we do every day. We recognize that underrepresented groups may be less likely to apply to a role if they don’t meet 100% of the listed qualifications. We are committed to growth and we encourage you to apply if you meet a majority of the qualifications and this role is aligned with your career trajectory and interests.
You might be a fit if you:
- Have 5+ years working as a professional software engineer.
- Have experience serving as technical lead for large initiatives involving several engineering contributors.
- Know how to build robust, maintainable web applications — both from the frontend and backend perspective.
- Are energized by collaborating with cross-functional peers and excited about a role that blends technical contributions with leadership and project management.
- Take ownership over the outcomes of your entire team and go beyond meeting the minimum requirements to deliver a great product experience for users.
- Are always learning and continuously hunting for ways to hone your craft — and proactively share those learnings through mentoring.
- Take initiative to identify, draw attention to, and fill gaps on your team.
