The Talent Services Department of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory has an opportunity for a Benefits Administrator to partner with the Health & Welfare Benefits Manager (Section Supervisor) to administer the Laboratory’s leave of absence and disability plans. You will work closely with disability vendors, serve as the first point of contact for the leaves customer service team to provide guidance on leave and disability questions and issues, educate and support staff across the Lab on leave and disability benefits, ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, and maintain related documentation.
As the Leave & Disability Benefits Administrator...
- Oversee administration of the Laboratory’s leave of absence and disability programs, which includes all paid and unpaid leaves categories.
- Enhance customer service to staff by providing direction and support on leave and disability plan benefits to the customer service team and to staff and supervisors directly. Serve as first point of contact for the customer service team for their questions and issues. Resolve escalated customer service issues. Work Closely with disability vendor on compliance and customer service matters.
- Provide education to support new staff and address cross-training needs. Coach and mentor leave of absence customer service team to enhance knowledge.
- Research Federal leave laws, such as the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the dynamic, changing environment of state- and local- level leave laws by analyzing government regulations and market trends to ensure that programs are current, competitive and legally compliant. Prepare and present results of this analysis and partner in implementing changes.
- Work closely with disability vendors on compliance and customer service matters. Ensure plan documentation is up-to-date and compliant.
- Create, maintain and present educational materials to staff and leaders that will enhance their knowledge of the rules and internal and external processes for the various types of leaves and disability.
- Ensure compliance with all required leaves communications, such as leave approval and denial letters.

- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related subject area or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 4 years specialized leave of absence and disability plan management experience.
- Possess superior customer service, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate ability to multi-task and plan and prioritize work, including work of others, while meeting tight deadlines.
- Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills and initiative for tackling challenges.
- Possess exceptional organizational skills, the ability to meet deadlines and have keen attention to detail.
- Have strong analytical skills with shown ability to tackle difficult problems.
- Experience in building partnering relationships with vendors.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For part-time salaried employees, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, part-time study and training and development. Minimum Rate$54,700 Annually
Maximum Rate$175,000 Annually
