ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
a. Receives and reviews requests for level II scans on patients
b. Explains exam to the patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs
c. Reviews exam and collaborates with MFM specialist in a timely fashion and collegial way
d. Demonstrates excellent bedside manners
e. Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patient who is not only under physical and emotional stress. Must have knowledge in how to handle “Bad news to patients” and may have to attend specific courses or lectures in hospital. Multiple complaints on this issue is grounds for termination of employment.
f. Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques and procedures and fetal anatomy and physiology.
g. Must be able to stand and walk most of the day.
h. Follows and spreads "Culture of Service Excellence"
i. Executes paperwork and enters patients in the computer in a timely fashion order to maintain pace of patient flow
2. Prepares equipment and supplies at the beginning of the day and during patient care and at the end of the day
a. Is knowledgeable in the operation of equipment to be used during the workday and identify malfunctions and repairs needed by notifying MFM attending
b. Is knowledgeable with the method used to clean and disinfect equipment used and follows that method strictly
3. Maintains effective working relations and communications with division members (sonographers, MFM staff, genetic counsellor, perinatal nurse)
a. May assist Ob/gyn attendings in OR with ultrasound guidance after approval of MFM staff
b. Follows “Med Teams” mentality in division and Hospital. Participates in clerical duties if needed on rare occasional times to facilitate smooth function of division
c. Communicates information to referring physicians in a timely fashion if needed
4. Participates in training of sonographer students, residents, MFM fellows, genetic counsellor students as deemed necessary but the MFM staff/director
a. Is willing to travel with MFM staff to be educated in new processes and techniques.
b. Acknowledge and participate in research programs,quality assurance and quality improvement projects carried on in the division/department
c. Must be NT certified or become within 1st year of employment. Division will cover cost. If sonographer no longer works at least for 1 year following certification for division will have to reimburse division the full amount incurred.
d. Remain up to date on developments and trends in the MFM field
5. Fosters a culture of safety.
a. Performs exams in accordance with National Patient Safety guidelines (2 points of patient id,time out)
b. Utilizes universal precaution techniques.
c. Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to hospital guidelines.
Job Requirements
Minimum Education - Preferred
Graduate of accredited Ultrasound Program required
Minimum Work Experience
At least 2 years of Level II scanning preferred
Required Licenses / Registrations
RDMS or eligible - Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
Required Certifications -
NT - Nuchal Translucency
