Job Highlights:
Schedule 3pm-11:30pm Monday - Friday. No Weekends.
Job Summary:
Performs standard 12-lead EKGs and rhythm strips, using computerized electrocardiographs. Maintains appropriate patient and departmental records, including posting of interpreted tests in the patient medical record and patient charges. Maintains and promotes Hospital service standards.
Job Responsibilities and Requirements:
POSITIONS ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of time)
Essential Functions: The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:
Position Accountabilities
1) Performs standard 12 lead EKG using computerized electrocardiograph. (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8) 35%
Criteria
A) Completes job duties within a required time frame, according to established schedules or requirements of workflow.
B) Performs routine testing with less than 1 % QC errors.
C) Ensures timely retrieval or records and information.
D) Keeps department supervisor apprised of departmental problems.
2) Performs rhythm strips using computerized electrocardiograph (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8) 5%
Criteria
A) Completes job duties within a required time frame, according to established schedules or requirements of workflow.
B) Performs routine testing with less than 1% QC errors.
3) Retrieves stored EKGs and transfers data to the Muse (1, 2, 3, 5, 6) 10%
Criteria
A) Retrieves and organizes appropriate data from records and files.
B) Retrieves stored EKGs from floor machines via diskette.
C) Transfers stored EKGs from diskettes to the Muse.
4) Edits and retrieves EKGs and reports (1, 2, 3, 5, 6) 20%
Criteria
A) Edits EKG reports after physician review using the MUSE editor and appropriate acronyms.
B) Prints final report and files in patient’s chart.
C) Stores, retrieves and prints EKGs as requested.
5) Charges, credits, and reconciles EKG charges (1, 2, 5) 5%
Criteria
A) Edits EKG charges as necessary.
B) Enters charges for EKGs.
C) Enters EKG credits as needed.
D) Reconciles charges daily.
6) Processes EKG reports (1, 5) 5%
Criteria
A) Posts interpreted EKGs in the patients’ medical records on the same day as editing.
B) Mails reports to outpatient and other locations on the same day as editing.
7) Assists in the Heart Station and Holter Laboratory as needed. 5%
Criteria
A) Hooks up Holter and cardiac event monitors as required.
B) Hooks up and discontinues telemetry monitors, changes electrodes, and complete paperwork.
C) Assists with typing over read reports and processing them as needed.
8) Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) 5%
Criteria
A) Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.
B) Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.
1. Maintains clutter free environment.
2. Keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum.
3. Adheres to dress code.
C) Reports risk management concerns to the supervisor.
D) Adheres to policies regarding food or drinks in patient care areas.
E) Assumes responsibility for completing all hospital and department annual mandatory requirements.
F) Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
9) Service: Provides service excellence to the customers of Saint Louis University Hospital by delivering timely, high quality care in a courteous and respectful manner.

10) Performance Improvement (PI): Incorporates Quality Assessment into one’s daily work. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) 5%
Criteria
A) Assists in developing departmental PI plan.
B) Collects PI data as assigned.
C) Participates in discussion of PI results.
D) Collaborates in developing and implementing action plans.
E) Participates in research activities of the department.
11) Age Appropriate Care: Provides age-appropriate care to:

D) Involves family or significant other in decision making related to services provided.
E) Demonstrates ability to provide service needed for the age groups routinely served by the department assigned.
12) Specialized Care: Provides specialized care to patients at high risk for injury. (1, 2, 4, 5, 8) <1%
A) Restraint Care
1) Is aware of restraint care criteria for St. Louis University Hospital.
B) Pain Management
1) Follows pain management plan of care, e.g.: repositioning, massage, immobilization, music therapy etc.
2) Reports patient complaints of pain to the nursing staff and/or physician.
C) Abuse Assessment
1) Is aware of abuse recognition criteria and incorporates it into assessments.
2) Reports signs of possible abuse/neglect to the physician & Risk Management, and recommends appropriate consultations (psychiatric, Social Work) for evaluation.
The following job accountabilities may be reassigned.
1) Filing of EKG reports into patient charts.
2) Review and credit duplicate charges for EKGs.
3) Obtain EKG reports as requested by Physicians and other ancillary departments.

Job Specifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School or equivalent
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Training or experience performing EKGs;
REQUIRED COURSE: BLS
WORKING CONDITIONS: May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases.
Subject to electrical and radiant energy hazards. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional prolonged standing/walking. Occasionally lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Lifts supplies/equipment. Requires manual dexterity and mobility. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, pulling 100+ pounds.
