We're looking for an experienced Electronic Development Engineer to join our team.
Powell Industries, a US manufacturer of low- and medium-voltage electrical & electronic equipment for commercial, industrial, and utility systems. Powell's products include class-leading vacuum circuit breakers, monitoring, sensing and control electronics, communications and software systems, switchgear, motor control, and safety-focused enclosure systems.
Powell's 75-year leadership in vacuum switching technology and arc-flash safety is widely known and in use globally, while being designed and manufactured in multiple facilities in the US, Canada and the UK. Our R&D facilities located at one of our three Houston-area manufacturing facilities feature electrical, mechanical and electronic prototyping facilities and UL-certified high voltage and high current labs, where you will be able to model and validate the performance of your designs in real time.
Powell is hiring an Electronic Development Engineer for our Research and Development department. The role of the engineer is the development, validation and technical support of industrial electronic products from concept to full production, as well as continuation engineering on existing product lines. This role will include liaison with manufacturers, clients and internal production and engineering teams.
You will be involved in the development, validation and technical support of industrial electronic products from concept to formal release into customer facing applications. This will include liaison with manufacturers, clients and internal production and engineering teams where necessary. Posted position does not allow for sponsorship or relocation assistance.
Essential Responsibilities: - From defined specifications, formulate and execute a plan for the design, development and validation of industrial electronic products for use within switchgear environments. This will include new products and enhancements to existing products.
- From general specifications identify and verify alternate electronic components for use within a pre-existing product design
- Undertake and/or oversee validation and certification activities associated with the development of industrial electronic hardware.
- Generate and maintain detailed technical documents as required during the course of product development.
- With the R&D Manager agree a plan for the work allocated and be responsible for the execution, accuracy and content of the defined work.
- With the R&D Manager, develop and execute plans to manufacture the developed products in volume.
- Provide support for existing electronic products, as required by both the company and its customers.
- Collaboration within the department and cross functional teams to deliver the electronic products as required.
- Ensure that company procedures and standards are adhered to.
- To maintain and enhance one's knowledge of the latest technology to sustain and improve the company's products.
- To carry out any other reasonable duties, as assigned, which are within the capabilities of the job holder.
Qualifications: - BS Degree in Electronic Engineering or related area.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in industrial electronic product development role (Advanced degree and appropriate work experience (Eg intern positions) can count towards experience)
- Demonstrable time management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrable strong verbal and written communication skills with specific technical document writing and presentation experience.
- Demonstrable complex analytical and problem solving ability.
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. (Self-motivated and self-managing).
- Participation in a professional society desired.
Knowledge of and demonstrable experience of the following is required: - Microcontrollers applied in embedded industrial products.
- Analogue electronics signal processing.
- Power supply design & power electronics.
- Design for EMI/EMC and testing
- Hardware and Software Integration
- Electronic mechanical construction and design techniques.
- Electrical switchgear and controlgear for industrial power control, distribution and protection..
Familiarity & knowledge of the following is desired: - Altium ECAD tools.
- Autodesk Inventor.
- RTOS principals and operation.
- Embedded software development in "C".
- PC based software development.
- Awareness of regulatory standards (ANSI, IEEE, IEC).
Working Conditions: - Generally, requires working in a climate-controlled environment.
- Physical requirements include talking, hearing, reaching, and the ability to use a computer keyboard and mouse.

- There will be some work in a laboratory and shop environments and exposure to the elements of our shop.
- There will be some work performed in the field with exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities.
