Job Description
The Pharmacy Intern, under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist and in accordance with all State and Federal laws, assists with the selection, preparation, distribution, and record keeping of all medications dispensed to inpatients of St. Elizabeth Healthcare. The intern will also be provided opportunities to expand their clinical knowledge by assisting with clinical ... consultations via hospital protocols; completing medication histories; counseling on anticoagulation and methotrexate; converting medications from IV to PO; and adjusting medications for renal and hepatic function. Pharmacy Interns will adhere to the ICARE principles and exhibit the AIDET principles.
They will demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background. This position allows the student enrolled in the College of Pharmacy to gain pharmacy experience while completing their degree.
Job Duties
Department Operations
• Assists in the dispensing of medications in a timely and accurate manner filling medication bins, filling labels, restocking automated dispensing cabinets (ADC), and ancillary departments.
• Ensures timely receipt and delivery of all patient medication related information and products by making rounds as designated or necessary. Properly distributes medications and assures medications on nursing unit are compliant with regulatory guidelines.
• Assists in production of sterile preparations for patient use by aseptically compounding, labeling and storing product, in a timely and accurate manner as defined in departmental procedure.
• Answers the telephone in a timely and courteous manner, answering queries or directing the call to the appropriate person for resolution. Processes electronic medical record (EMR) messages in a timely and accurate manner. Adhere to the ICARE values and exhibiting the AIDET principles.
• Participates in expiration date checking in assigned areas. Ensures that all expiration dates for medications refilled/loaded in ADC’s have been checked and stock rotated to ensure shortest date is used first. Assists with cycle counts in perpetual inventory system on a monthly basis. Processes returns correctly while checking expiration dates before returning items to stock.
• Participates in the fill and/or check of code carts, boxes, bags, and kits by restocking items that were used during the code and checking for expired items, along with the final check per procedure.
Department Clinical Services
• Performs and documents best possible medication histories to ensure safe and effective medication administration. Updates the patient’s outpatient pharmacy and allergies/intolerances with specific reaction.
• Performs and documents anticoagulation and methotrexate counseling with patients being discharged on an anticoagulant or methotrexate. Ensures patients have appropriate medication management clinic visits for monitoring, as necessary.
• Assists with assisting with clinical consultations via hospital protocols; converting medications from IV to PO; and adjusting medications for renal and hepatic function. The pharmacy intern with make changes in the EMR using the saved work function and will report recommended changes to their supervising pharmacist.
Medication Use Safety Initiatives
• Ensure safe use of medications by detecting and reporting in a timely manner, in MIDAS, variances in dispensing, adverse drug reactions, or a medication near miss/error with a goal of reducing the incidence of medication errors.
Professional Development and Growth
• Maintain licensure and current knowledge of pharmacy practice to ensure accurate and up-to-date drug therapy
• Complete all departmental competency/skills assessment requirements
• Complete newsletter submissions and operations or clinical projects as needed by the Pharmacy Leadership Team to improve pharmacy services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare.
• Effectively answer questions and provide guidance to pharmacy technicians.
• Demonstrate the ability to show patience and effective education strategies while precepting new employees through development of aids, checklists and competency evaluations for areas of focus.
• Projects a positive and professional image commensurate with the intern position. Enhances career development through attendance and participation in departmental meetings, educational in-services and communication tools.
Qualifications
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
• Registered Intern with Kentucky Board of Pharmacy
• Enrolled in an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy
OR
• A graduate of an approved college or school of pharmacy awaiting examination for licensure as a pharmacist or the results of an examination for licensure as a pharmacist
Desireable: Degree in a related area of studies (Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics)
Specialized Knowledge:
• Experience with Microsoft Office
Desirable: Understanding of Pharmacy Calculations and IV Admixture Experience
