Summary: Performs laboratory tests on packaging materials to determine physical characteristics, stability, structure and function for such purposes as quality control, quality assurance, process control, product development, and appearance by performing the following duties ... Requirements:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Sets up, adjusts and operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, agitators, scales, spectrophotometer, colorimeter, viscometer, ovens, freezer, moisture chamber, benchtop sealer, power & pneumatic tools.
Tests packaging materials for extended shelf life stability, chemical compatibility, performance, and function using ovens, freezer, & moisture chamber and various devices and tools.
Fill out R&D work requests, coordinate with production to fill packaging on factory equipment.
Gather raw materials. Name, number, and create labels for individual components for testing.
Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used
Prepares graphs, charts and doing limited data analysis.
Supports Packaging Engineer to validate, test, and track packaging.
Evaluate samples of packaging and components to verify conformity to specifications and drawings.
Set up and assemble multiple component displays of different materials. i.e. corrugated, wire, metal, etc.
Working with production team to quality inspect packaging materials and help solve production problems.
Knowledge of the supply chain and packaging flow process.
Working with material handling to acquire all supplies needed to set up a test. Record and communicate packaging quantities used for testing and R&D for inventory control.
Ordering samples from vendors
Limited travel to vendor manufacturing locations
Maintain laboratory in clean, orderly fashion.

Education and/or Experience:
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problem solving involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to do deductive/problem analysis work related to product/package failure.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software. Ability to document work in an organized form.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Use of standard lab equipment on a daily basis, saving, filing, and storing digital work to SOPs. Organizational skills. Organize samples for storage and easy identification for pulling. Manage multiple projects/multi-task with different priority and time commitments. Provide feedback and communicate project status and areas of improvement.
