Responsibilities:
Eligibility for Head Mechanic-Craft Skills, beginning March l, 1963, will be limited to those mechanics who are designated in writing as the Head Mechanic and whose principal assignment is in the following specified maintenance and repair functions:
• Automotive maintenance and repair.
• Boiler operation, maintenance, and repair. Cannery instruments maintenance and repair.
• Carpentry.
• Electrical maintenance and repair.
• Operation of lathe, drill press, milling machine, etc.
• Plumbing and pipe fitting.
• Seamer maintenance and repair.
• Sheetmetal installation.
• Warehouse equipment maintenance and repair.
In plants large enough to require departmentalizing of maintenance activities it is expected there will be one Head Mechanic in the specified departments. It is recognized that in smaller plants two or more of the specified maintenance functions may be combined, and in other cases, non-existent. The list of the ten departments does not automatically mean a Head Mechanic will be designated for each such department but where the function exists on a full-time basis (or at least for most of the year) it is expected there will be a Head Mechanic for each function.

Qualifications:
To be designated as the Head Mechanic, Bracket IB mechanics must meet the following conditions:
• Qualify as a Bracket IB mechanic in accordance with the terms of Appendix A.
• Be responsible for scheduling the day-to-day work for the employee's shift and other shifts.
• Order maintenance and repair supplies and material used in mechanical work in the department.
• Consult with supervision on needed repairs, changes and new equipment.
• Carry out training assignments in the department with respect to designated trainees under the On-the-Job Training Program.
• Be assigned as departmental leader during the processing season and during the off-season when major rehabilitation and repair of equipment is done.
• Keep records, inventories, cost sheets and timecards.
• Plan and lay out future work schedules.
There may be other expert trade crafts' employees with specialized skills who qualify as Head Mechanics (even if they have no responsibility to direct other mechanics) if they meet the above conditions and:
• Have a principal assignment as a specialized mechanic in recognized crafts other than those
• listed under I above.
• Is a finished mechanic and could qualify as a Journeyman in this trade in any industry or job shop.
• Be able to execute the necessary work without direct supervision.
Leader Cannery Mechanic Eligibility for Leader Cannery Mechanic, beginning March 1, 1963, will be limited to Bracket 1B mechanics, who may have no specialty but who are assigned to plan, organize and direct other mechanics. To qualify as a Leader Cannery Mechanic, Bracket IB mechanics must be assigned the responsibility of performing as a Leader over journeymen, Bracket 1B and other mechanics. Emphasis is placed more on the planning, organizing, and directing the work of other mechanics both for running repairs and maintenance during the processing season and major overhaul and rehabilitation during the offseason. The Leader Cannery Mechanic is not confined to any specific maintenance or repair functions but may perform work and function as a Leader in various cannery departments. The Leader Cannery Mechanic is responsible to the Superintendent or to the Assistant Superintendent or to a Maintenance Supervisor for directing other mechanics in the maintaining, building or installing of general canning machinery and equipment throughout the plant. The Leader will also carry out training assignments with respect to designated trainees under the On-the-Job Training Program BRACKET IAA.
