Job Description:
The Inpatient Coding Apprentice role offers a chance to learn the complex skills necessary to be an inpatient hospital MS DRG coder. The program includes hands-on coding assignments, classroom instruction, and online modules, with progress evaluated through competency checklists and skills assessments which will help build a solid coding foundation. Apprentices will work under the direct supervision of experienced coding professionals, receiving regular feedback and guidance. The Inpatient Coding Apprentice is an entry level position for an Inpatient Coding Analyst who deciphers and interprets provider documentation in the health record and assigns diagnostic information using ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for a complex range of acute care services for Intermountain Health. The caregiver provides specific coding expertise in the various fields of NCCI edits, drugs and biologicals, revenue codes, ICD-10-CM codes, DRGs (Diagnosis Related Group), anatomy and physiology, pharmacology.
Essential Functions
- Learn and apply inpatient coding guidelines through structured training.
- Complete hands‑on coding assignments from start to finish.
- Meet required coding accuracy and productivity benchmarks.
- Review inpatient medical records for completeness and compliance.
- Assign ICD‑10‑CM/PCS codes under supervision.
- Ensure coded data reflects clinical severity and quality of care.
- Query providers for documentation clarification.
- Follow coding policies, procedures, and ethical standards.

Qualifications
- Must apply and complete the Apprentice Pre-screening process and fulfill all pre-requisites
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Coding Certification from AHIMA or AAPC
- Demonstrates entry level ability to understand and compliantly apply complex coding and billing requirements
- Demonstrates entry level knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, medical acronyms, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and APR-DRG classification systems
- Ability to complete and pass internal coding exam
- Requires adaptability, teamwork, communication, willingness to learn, and a growth mindset.
- Open to constructive criticism and actively seek opportunities to improve.
Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need for caregiver to see and read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
- Frequent interactions with customers that require caregiver to communicate as well as understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
- Requires fine motor skills for accurate handling of equipment and regular setup and use of computers, phones, and cables.
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transport, pull, and push equipment. Will also work on hands and knees and bend to set-up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
