Mission of Role/Position Summary:
The Safety & Security Associate supports the safe, respectful, and orderly operation of temporary mobile warming shelters during cold weather events. This role focuses on maintaining a safe environment, assisting in managing lines or crowds, de-escalating conflicts, driving the mobile shelter van, and responding to safety concerns while treating all guests with dignity and compassion.
This position is not law enforcement and not armed security and emphasizes observation, communication, and coordination with shelter leadership and emergency services when needed.
Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

Safety & Security Operations
- Manage guest flow, capacity limits, and line order during loading and offboarding.
- Conduct routine walkthroughs of the vehicle interior and immediate exterior area during assigned shifts.
- Identify and promptly report safety concerns, hazards, or suspicious activity to operational leadership.
- Ensure aisles, exits, and emergency equipment remain clear and accessible at all times.
Conflict Prevention, De-Escalation, & Guest Interactions
- Use trauma-informed, verbal de-escalation techniques to resolve conflicts between guests or between guests and staff.
- Intervene early to prevent escalation while maintaining personal safety and respecting guest autonomy.
- Reinforce mobile warming station guidelines related to behavior, capacity, and safety in a respectful manner.
- Request leadership support or emergency assistance when situations exceed the capacity of mobile team.
Emergency Response & Incident Management
- Respond calmly and appropriately to medical, behavioral, or safety emergencies within the mobile environment.
- Contact emergency services (EMS, fire, police) when required and in accordance with established protocols.
- Assist with vehicle-specific emergency procedures, including evacuation or relocation of the mobile warming shelter.
- Complete incident reports accurately and promptly following any safety or emergency event.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to maintain the safety and integrity of the mobile warming shelter operation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience working with homeless, at-risk, or vulnerable populations preferred.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques.
- Strong verbal communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in high-stress situations.
- Comfortable working in diverse environments with individuals of all backgrounds.
- Must be able to exercise sound judgment and patience when handling sensitive situations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Safety Officer may have lead responsibilities within projects or small teams depending on function with senior level support.
Expected Hours of Work:
Expected schedule 6-7 days per week up to 12 hours per day. Schedule may vary. Work on evenings and weekends may be required. Dependability and punctuality are paramount.
Travel Requirements:
- Up to 100% travel is expected for this position.
- Must be willing to travel and deploy to client sites for extended periods of time.
Physical Demands:
- Mobility required on-site with clients.
- Sitting or standing for hours at a time.
- Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time if needed.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. repetitively throughout the day and as needed.
Working Environment:
- Emergency management consultants may work in an office or home environment or be deployed to the field which may require working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Work may be on-site with clients ex: EOC, hospital, debris sites or local government buildings.
- All AC Disaster Consulting (ACDC) positions are remote work site positions with the home location agreed upon at time of hire.
- If the remote work site locations change, ACDC Human Resources must be made aware, and leadership needs to approve any site changes for business registration and payroll tax purposes.
Experience/Education Required:
- Valid Driver’s License & insurance in your name
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with de-escalation, conflict resolution, or customer service
- Ability to follow written and verbal procedures
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overnight shifts
- At least 1 year experience as a Security/Safety Guard
Experience/Education Preferred:
- Homeless services or shelter operations
- Security, safety monitoring, or site control
- Social services, behavioral health, or crisis response
- Emergency management or disaster response
Training in:
- De-escalation or crisis intervention (e.g., CPI, Mental Health First Aid)
- First Aid / CPR (or ability to obtain)
Additional Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Eligibility to work in the United States without employer sponsored visa is required. We are not able to employ those located outside of the US.
