Chronic Illness Coach | Guide Women Through the Realities of Living with Chronic Conditions
Freelance | Remote | Flexible Schedule
About Sam
The U.S. does not have a support system for women—so we are building one.
Launching in April 2025, Sam is a high-caliber, evidence-based support system designed for the complexities of life’s transitions. Our experts provide one-on-one guidance, curated resources, and a private, women-only community.
The Role: Chronic Illness Coach
Women in our focus groups made one thing clear: navigating chronic illness is overwhelming, and they want a guide who understands the experience firsthand.
We are seeking women who have personally experienced chronic illness and can coach others through the practical, emotional, and logistical challenges of managing long-term conditions.
This is not a wellness or medical advisory role. Instead, this role is about guidance, advocacy, and support.
Chronic Illness Coaches help women:
- Find the right healthcare providers and advocate for themselves in medical settings
- Navigate the healthcare system, including making appointments and understanding insurance
- Prepare for doctor’s visits and develop strategies for medical self-advocacy
- Understand patient rights and access available healthcare resources
- Balance work, relationships, and daily life while managing chronic illness
- Manage a new diagnosis and the emotional toll of uncertainty
If you have spent years figuring out the system, advocating for yourself or loved ones, and now want to help other women avoid the same struggles, we’d love to hear from you.
Important Compliance Considerations
- This is not a medical role. Chronic Illness Coaches at Sam do not provide medical advice, diagnose conditions, or recommend specific treatments. Instead, they offer practical guidance and lived-experience coaching.
- No handling of medical records or HIPAA-protected data. Coaches must never request, store, or manage clients' personal health information (PHI) or medical records. All coaching conversations must focus on non-clinical guidance, such as system navigation, emotional support, and self-advocacy.
- Clients must consult a licensed medical professional for healthcare decisions. Coaches should always refer clients back to their medical providers for any clinical or treatment-related concerns.
Qualifications
- Personal experience with chronic illness. You have lived this journey and understand the real challenges.
- Five or more years of professional experience in coaching, advocacy, social work, patient navigation, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of the healthcare system, including how to find quality providers, push back against dismissive care, and access patient resources.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to break down complex processes into actionable steps.
- A trauma-informed, compassionate approach with strong coaching and listening skills.
