General Summary
Under general supervision, perform a variety of routine and specialized technical procedures applying prescribed ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnostics.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
Clinical Practice Patient Care - Operates the technical equipment and applies ionizing radiation to the patient in accordance with standard operating procedures according to the Diagnostic Imaging Department’s Policy and Procedures manual.
A. Demonstrates basic clinical competence in Fluoroscopy, pediatrics, trauma, trauma OR, general OR, emergency x-ray, orthopedic clinic, portable radiography and diagnostic imaging.
B. Demonstrates basic competencies in processing images and troubleshooting.
C. Responds effectively to patient care emergencies.
D. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to age of the patient.
E. Demonstrates clinical competence.
F. Participates in continuing education to maintain certification and licensure.
G. Provides radiation protection in accordance with regulations. Selects accurate technical factors on an individual patient basis.
H. Utilizes universal precautions at all times when working with patients. Sets up and maintains a sterile field by utilizing sterile technique; opens sterile procedures trays where applicable.
Unit Management
A. Maintains supplies and inventory in area. Informs Radiographer II when supplies need to be ordered from outside vendors.
B. Reports all potential or actual patient/equipment problems to the Rad II and/or III.
C. Documents and reports related equipment problems in accordance to UMMC policy, and department policy and procedures manual.
Leadership
A. Participates in one area-wide committee.
B. Participates in departmental initiatives and efforts to improve workflows and patient satisfaction.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology. Registered or Registry-eligible by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. CPR certification is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of radiology principles and practices including anatomy and physiology, radiation protection and physics, radiographic positioning and nursing procedure.
- Ability to operate radiology equipment such as radiographic machines, radiographic/fluoroscopic machines, portables, tomography systems, c-arms, chest/heat units, processors and daylight film loaders.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
- Ability to use computer systems to manage patient information.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are required in order to work with patients, medical and nursing personnel.
