Department: Psychiatric Unit | Mental Health RN
*Certifications: BLS. CPI- need to have before starting*
- # Beds: 25- Adult. 25- Child/adolescent (5-17years). 14- Geriatric.
- Nurse:Patient Ratios: 2 nurses around the clock on all units. M-F team leader ( supervisor) during the day.
Nurse manager during the day during the week. Average daily child/ado census 15; adults- avg 17; senior 9.
Do have some LPNS.
- Required certifications: BLS. CPI- need to have before starting.
- Patient Populations/Common diagnoses: Adult- Major Depressive Disorder, bipolar, schizoaffective
disorder/schizophrenia, substance abuse, anxiety, psychosis. Child/Ado- MDD, behavior and conduct issues,
disruptive mood regulation disorder, ADHD, anxiety- trauma history- a lot in DCFS custody. Geri- 50+ dementia
with aggression, dementia with behavioral , depression, some psychoses, neurocognitive disorder with
behavioral disturbance, anxiety. Nurses may be required to run health topics group (ex nutrition, medication,
etc.) Would not be primarily responsible to run group therapy.
- Experience: One year behavior health experience. Prefer previous travel. Epic experience. Must be committed to
fulfilling the full contract.
- Do you ever have IV's on this unit?: Senior unit can have Ivs, oxygen, suction, wounds. Take care of medical
issues but have a primary psych diagnosis. Approx. 1-2 patients per month needs iv abx/fluids.
- Charge Nurse 24/7: Team Leader is the charge nurse when on shift during the day. Team Leader will take a
patient assignment, depending on census/acuity. Charge nurses are assigned in Team Leader’s absence and take
patients.
- Do you use physical restraints on this unit?: They are used as a last resort. Physical holds per CPI and mechanical
restraints. They have low restraint numbers and want to keep it that way.
- Are there nurse aids or mental health specialists on this unit?: CNAs on the geri unit. Mental health techs (not
CNAs) on the other units. Nursing team assists with adls on the other units (if needed. Most are independent).
15 minute rounds techs/nursing work together to complete. Teamwork is expected. Nurses may perform CNA
duties as needed.
- Is RT available if needed: Available- RT does nebs.
- Is there tele on this unit: No tele.
- Shifts & Scheduling: Senior unit, 5-5. Adult/Peds/Adolescent, 7-7. Nurse would float between the three units.
Floated within scheduled hours. Schedule is set up by management. Will try to accommodate block schedule.
Schedule posted 30 days ahead.
- Weekend Requirements: Every other.
- Holiday Requirements: Every other.
- Is there call or a standby requirement: Could be called off up to two shifts.
- Floating Requirements: Typically no floating outside behavioral health department.
- Scrub Color/Dress Code: Caribbean blue.
- Unit/Department specific orientation: One 12 hour shift on the unit.
