Job Summary: In addition to general nursing, the Registered Nurse in the Endoscopy / Post Anesthesia unit is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care and to actively participate in and contribute to the management of the Endoscopy Unit.Primary Responsibilities: Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care. Implements the plan of care by protecting the patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources and extraneous objects; managing the patient’s specimens in the appropriate manner; communicating the patient’s status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care; administering medications safely and correctly; performing interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels; preparing necessary supplies and equipment for the procedures, performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels; assisting the physician with manipulation of scope, polyp snare, cut polyps, cauterize polyps, dilations, bandings and other procedures as needed; IV therapy to include Insertion, use of aseptic technique, Site, application Dressing, Tubing changes and Use of pumps.Maintains a safe and clean environment within the clinical area in accordance with established standards and regulations. Participating in the care and maintenance of endoscopes and other specialized equipment, ensuring an agreed standard of decontamination always including accurate records of traceability of all endoscopes and associated equipment.Has knowledge of the following procedures and ability to perform: defibrillation – adult and pediatric; airway management – adult and pediatric; code management; assist with intubation; proper patient positioning in accordance with procedure being performed.Prioritizes and implements an efficient nursing plan of care relating to the care Endoscopy Unit patients. Consistently conducts timely evaluations, recognizes changes in patient conditions, determines when reassessments are needed, and adjusts the plan of care as necessary.Evaluate patient’s response to interventions and communicates with other healthcare team members the need to revise or maintain plan of care.Assess patient’s postoperative status at intervals according to facility or health care organization policies and procedures to include the patient’s respiratory system and airway management needs, neurological system, hemodynamic stability, pain and comfort needs, and mental status.Apply the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient transfer (e.g., Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score [i.e., PARSAP], Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System [PADSS], White) score accurately as defined by organizational policy.
Job Requirements
Minimum two (2) years' medical surgical, critical care and/or endoscopy experience.Critical thinking, math, and computer skills.Works as a team player.Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.Excellent oral and communication skills.Decision making and problem solving.Able to see, hear, read and write English.Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range.Frequently sitting at desk working on computer.Ability to work flex hours.
