JOB OVERVIEW
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is Canada’s largest charitable funder of cancer research. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Research Programs, the Research Programs Senior Specialist works collaboratively with the Research Team to provide critical support to the development and implementation of the Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS) research programs and supports ongoing monitoring and evaluation of these programs to ensure appropriate use of research funds and accountability to donors for funds invested.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

Research Program Implementation
Develop/update and monitor calendar to track grant cycle milestones for multiple and overlapping programs (4-6 per year on average)
Create/update first draft of grant/award application structure/configuration based on program description for each funding program and ensure appropriate reviews/approvals are collected in a timely manner
Work closely with Business Analyst to implement grant/award application configuration in grants management system (includes reviewing configuration for errors and testing)
Create/update first draft of applicant guides based on program description (English and French), with support from Senior Manager, Research Programs, where needed
Create/update first draft of reviewer guides based on evaluation criteria (English and French), with support from Senior Manager, Research Programs, where needed
Oversee/manage expedient administrative review of applications (and manage translation of applications to English from French where required)
Manage entry of approved reviewer assignments into the grants management system
Monitor review panel timelines for submission of self-reporting (conflicts and expertise) and review report/score submission, and send reminders/provide support as needed
Review and edit (where required) Scientific Officer and Reviewer reports for each competition (with review by Senior Manager, Research Programs where needed)
Prepare first draft of Yellow Book (funding recommendations document provided to CCS’s Advisory Council on Research (ACOR)), with input from Senior Manager, Research Programs
Review project budgets for recommended grants/awards to ensure compliance with funding policies
Prepare first draft of award letters (successful and unsuccessful) for review

Research Program Monitoring & Evaluation
Working with the Research Team, provide support with program evaluation through data cleaning/coding, survey input and review, and other input as requested
Responsible for initiating internal annual and ad-hoc review of research policies and processes (conducted as joint team project)
Support the review and approval of annual progress reports and statements of account from funded grants and awards as required
Revise/update and run reports (using Crystal Reports) to support program monitoring and evaluation

Communication
Act as a back-up/2nd level of response for the research inbox (e.g. applicant and grantee questions, requests for cancer research information)
Draft/update emails for competition announcements and other relevant information for mass researcher audiences
Interact and communicate with applicants, grantees, host institution administrators and reviewers as required to ensure adherence to CCS policies, practices and procedures
Draft/update web content as it relates to research funding programs and research policies (and act as a back-up for Sitecore updates when needed)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Post-secondary education - university degree is required
3 or more years of experience in a similar or related position is required
Health-related or research-related field preferred
Project Management certification recommended
Bilingual (English/French) preferred
Experience in a grant funding environment recommended
Project management experience required (certification recommended)
Experience working with complex information required
Ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy with internal and external stakeholders and deal with confidential information on a regular basis
Ability to work independently (self-starter) and collaboratively as an effective team member, as required
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Superior attention to detail and analytical skills
