Business Development Lead - Decarbonization and Sustainability: This is where you come in.
We are seeking a Business Development Lead - Decarbonization and Sustainability to spearhead customer relationships, cultivate new business opportunities, and oversee impactful engineering consulting projects. This role combines technical expertise with strategic collaboration, partnering with internal teams to deliver innovative sustainability solutions.
Focusing on building decarbonization, energy efficiency, and advancing corporate ESG goals, this position requires staying ahead of industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies. You’ll play a critical role in meeting evolving customer needs and driving MacDonald-Miller’s commitment to sustainability forward.

- Customer Relationships: Strengthen existing client relationships and build connections with prospective customers to expand the base.
- Opportunity Generation: Identify new decarbonization and sustainability consulting opportunities; develop tailored proposals and fee schedules.
- Project Management: Oversee engineering projects focused on decarbonization, energy modeling, and sustainability; maintain project trackers for timely delivery.

The Business Development Lead - Decarbonization and Sustainability role reports directly to Marisa Zylkowski, Sustainable Design Manager, as part of a dynamic and collaborative team driving diverse projects and initiatives that fuel our business growth. This high-impact position engages with stakeholders across all levels and departments within the organization, ensuring visibility and alignment with company-wide objectives.
Your Background: What kind of person will thrive in this role?
You should have…
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy, Architecture, Construction Management, Planning, Real Estate, Facility Management, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- Experience: 5+ years in the buildings industry, with a focus on business development, relationship cultivation, and strategic solutions to address customer challenges.
- Technical Knowledge: A solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building control systems, along with expertise in district energy systems, central plants, renewable technologies, carbon credit/offset markets, and federal/utility incentives.
- Communication Skills: Proven ability to write detailed reports and deliver impactful presentations to audiences ranging from entry-level professionals to executives.
- Regulatory Familiarity: Knowledge of Building Performance Standards, including the Washington Clean Buildings Standard, Seattle Emissions Performance Standard (BEPS), and Oregon Building Energy Performance Standards, as well as their implementation timelines.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Suite, including Excel, Word, and MS Project.
- Certifications (Optional): Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Decarbonization Professional (CDP), LEED, LFA, or other relevant sustainability accreditations.

Compensation: $100,000 to $150,000 Annually
