Summary
This intern opportunity will start out as part time in February 2025 working 15-25 hours per week while attending classes during the spring semester. It will then convert to 40 hours per week in May after classes have ended for the summer and will end in August.
The Public Awareness Intern will support the Public Awareness Specialist, Field Specialists and HSE Manager to ensure that compliant Public Awareness methods and practices are used consistently throughout the company. A willingness to learn and obtain new information, combined with a dedication to the protection of our people, the public and the environment through safe and efficient operations is critical to the success of this position. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in community outreach and environmental awareness within the oil and gas industry.
Responsibilities:
Work with Public Awareness Specialist to ensure compliance, standardization and consistency of Public Awareness program, processes and procedures for all domestic operations. Support to include assurance towards standardization of processes, training curriculum, and procedures involved with damage prevention, public awareness and other asset protection activities.
Assist in managing Plains’ First Responder Grant Program and Educational Grant Program by communicating with external stakeholders, compiling/storing documentation, and supporting program administration.
Create slide decks consisting of grant applications to be presented during the monthly Grant Program Committee Meeting.
Assist in creating content and collateral for public awareness initiatives.
Collaborate with corporate communications partners to deliver robust pipeline safety messaging on digital channels.
Assist in the enhancement of our Public Awareness Program (PAP) beyond baseline while maintaining regulatory requirements.
Work closely with Public Awareness Specialist to help identify effective Public Awareness Programs and materials used for stakeholder(s) required education.
Support Division DPPA Specialists with conducting excavator (contractor) and public awareness education meetings.
Provide support to Environmental, Health and Safety departments as it relates to the regulatory compliance of Plains Public Awareness Program.
Participate in face-to-face efforts with stakeholders through Community Outreach program, liaison meetings with emergency and public officials, events, industry efforts, etc.
Supports employees who wish to promote the PAP in their communities and provide information and training materials regarding the PAP.
Assist in compiling documentation for Federal and State based audits on behalf of Plains’ Public Awareness Program.

Assist in various ad hoc requests as required in support of Public Awareness Specialist, Damage Prevention Specialists/Analysts, facility operations/maintenance or corporate initiatives.
Qualifications:
Currently pursing Bachelor’s degree at an accredited university
Strong oral and written communication skills necessary effectively with all levels of personnel and outside contacts including ability to facilitate meetings effectively and deliver well-organized presentations
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
Must have a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills
Proficiency with MS Office including Excel, Word and Outlook
Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively and work as a team player
Knowledge and expertise in supporting and developing technology-based tools and training techniques.
Strong quantitative and analytical skills
Effective project management and proactive decision-making skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and other tools used for documentation, workflows and procedure development used in compliance efforts:
Ability to travel 10% of time.
Ability to occasionally lift or carry moderately heavy equipment or parts (10 – 15 lbs.). Work may require stooping, kneeling, bending, climbing and walking distances in all types of terrain. With proper training, may be required to work in confined space.
Works outdoors in open environment with extremes of heat and cold 5% of time.
Cleared criminal history (background) and satisfactory reference checks
Compliance with the Company’s drug and alcohol policy including pre-employment D&A testing.

For our summer internship program, we look for sophomores, juniors, or seniors, working toward a bachelor's degree with solid academic credentials along with significant extracurricular involvement. Strong written and verbal communications skills are key to our business as well as having strong attention to detail. Students must demonstrate effective planning and organizational skills, proficiency with Microsoft products (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and a strong desire to learn more about the Oil and Gas business.
